Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), parent company of Anheuser-Busch Companies, LLC, AmBev, Grupo Modelo, and SABMiller, and the largest beer producer in the world, recently undertook a global cloud migration initiative that would transform the business over the course of 3 years, culminating in 2020. The digital transformation would require all geographic regions to prepare and migrate their workloads to the Microsoft Azure cloud.
AB InBev’s global roll out particularly affected the team in South Africa, headquartered in Johannesburg. The African region was divided up into multiple geographic areas, each with their own infrastructure and environments. As a result, the team needed a way to understand what each region had in their footprints. Some regions were utilizing SCCM (Microsoft’s System Center Configuration Manager) as a way to understand their assets. However, the software asset management tool did not have the capabilities to give the proper performance-based statistics, including utilization metrics and recommended cloud VM sizing, that would be needed for a successful cloud migration.

With an environment as large as AB InBev’s, there was a varied distribution across on-prem servers and virtual servers. Their on-prem environments were often underutilized by up to 50%-70% based on CPU, memory, and disk utilization data collected during Movere’s Actual Resource Consumption (ARC) scan. The challenge was identifying those environments that were being underutilized and plan optimization strategies to ensure that the new cloud environments would be sized as efficiently as possible. Moving forward with the traditional lift-and- shift model would be a significantly higher expense than optimizing an environment to be as close to consumption-based as possible.

Movere was brought in to assist with analyzing AB InBev’s data estate so the team could plan for their cloud migration in the most efficient manner. Movere is able to scan an organization’s environment and bring back data around actual resource consumption, addressing AB InBev’s need for an accurate understanding of usage, intelligently calculate and size for the most optimal Windows VM sizes in Azure, and work in conjunction with other asset management tools, like SCCM, to compliment those findings.
Movere is then able to recommend optimization opportunities based on the current usage of an environment and identify areas that should be addressed before they are migrated to the cloud. Movere’s intelligent analytic capabilities also identify dependency mappings, providing AB InBev with an understanding of what is dependent on the infrastructure moving to the cloud, ensuring a smooth transition with as little interruption as possible.
Results from Movere
Movere was able to deliver back all the necessary insights that AB InBev needed. After rapid deployment and a few hours of scanning, Movere was already able to collect asset data in their Active Directory domains, identify their cloud servers, and provide insight into their activity and status. Movere was able to discover 25% more servers than originally thought resided in the environment, uncovering some environments that were offline, expired, or retired, and providing a clear understanding of the devices that the team was unaware even existed. Furthermore, with Movere, AB InBev has been able to gather SQL asset data they did not previously have visibility into and identify what endpoints were connecting to those servers. As staff would customize and develop within the environment or leave the organization, many times the IP wouldn’t be documented, leaving the team without full awareness of the entirety of their footprint. With Movere, they’re now able to have a complete visibility into their asset inventory and detailed understanding of their environment at any moment in time.
